Expertise does not travel by itself. The regulatory discipline, deployment practice and technology maturity that Europe has spent the better part of two decades building rarely reaches India on its own — not because India lacks capability, but because nobody with a reason to move it usually does.
Two speeds, one shortfall
India is building infrastructure and digital systems at a pace most of Europe stopped matching decades ago. Roads, grids, identity systems, government digital services — all expanding faster than the institutions built to govern them. Building fast is not the same as building well, though, and the practices that prevent expensive mistakes — measurement discipline, identity governance, policy sequencing — take longer to mature than the infrastructure itself.
Europe has largely already done that maturing. Regulatory frameworks refined over a decade of iteration, data governance standards forced by hard experience, procurement processes documented and stress-tested by scale — all of it sits, mostly unused outside Europe, in institutions that have no reason to export it.
The gap is transfer, not capability
Most cross-border firms operate a sales-office model in a market like India: a local representative, a partner network, an arrangement built to close deals rather than deliver work. Nothing about that structure actually moves practice from one jurisdiction into another — it moves contracts, not capability.
We built Sustainability Holdings the other way round. Sustainability Holdings LLP is registered in India; Sustainability Holdings Limited, its wholly-owned subsidiary, is registered in England & Wales, established in 2018 specifically to extend delivery and partnerships across Europe. Both are genuine operating entities, not a representative office standing in front of a delivery team on the other side of the world.
What this looks like in practice
Tyrelessly and TechAPTO are the evidence this isn't aspirational. Tyrelessly took a circular-economy problem — end-of-life tyre disposal — from a 2015 launch to a UN ECOSOC presentation and the Manthan Award. TechAPTO built identity and access management discipline — the kind of governance European data protection law has made routine — into a business recognised among India's top 40 startups and among 20 leading IAM solution providers. Neither stayed a pilot.
Why this is the current focus
As India's compliance obligations toward Europe intensify — carbon reporting, data governance, supply-chain due diligence — the organisations that move practice across that border early will spend less time scrambling later. That is deliberately where we are putting our effort now: not one more service line, but the connective work between two operating environments that mostly still act as if the other doesn't exist.
